The 49ers had many players return for bonus Thursday practice, but since it's a bye week, there will be no practice report.
Arik Armstead, out since Week 14 with foot and knee problems, practiced early for the media. The interior defensive lineman may have participated in a heated, competitive workout, but only partially.
After two games out with a knee injury, rookie safety Ji'Ayir Brown returned, but position mate Tashaun Gipson remained sidelined with a quadriceps ailment. The club may turn to veteran Logan Ryan again if Gipson cannot return from injury for the divisional round.
Safety and special teams star George Odum wore a blue non-contact jersey during practice one day after his practice window opened Wednesday. Ambry Thomas joined him in defensive back warm-ups. Hand surgery kept the Michigan product out of the regular-season finale. Fred Warner was glad to see so many defensive players back on the field.
“So good to see those guys out there in uniform,” Warner remarked. “Seeing Arik in uniform again was great, considering how important he is to us and what we do. It's nice to keep everyone moving so they're ready when we need them next week.”
After passing the league's concussion protocol, Jauan Jennings returned to the 49ers' offense. Brandon Aiyuk noticed the wideout instantly.
“I think first it's the mindset,” Aiyuk remarked. “He transmits that throughout the room. His return to the field adds vitality. Although he was gone, we heard him in the huddle on the sidelines. Everyone can feel his positive energy
The 49ers remain cautious with Christian McCaffrey, who strained his calf in Week 17's win against the Washington Commanders. San Francisco is keeping him out of practice for the second week, but the league's rushing leader will be ready for the divisional round if he doesn't suffer any setbacks.
Since Week 17, linebacker Dre Greenlaw has had Achilles tendonitis and missed practice. Like McCaffrey, the 49ers are cautious with Greenlaw, who should practice next week. With a back ailment, offensive guard Jon Feliciano was out for practice but hopes to return before the Divisional round.
